]]>For the last few years, research study after study has cited that an increasing number of Canadians lead stressful lives, with 76% of Canadians citing high stress levels, putting us only behind South Korea and Australia for the world’s highest stress levels.
As a backlash to the chaos of modern life, many people are now turning inward and retreating from stress by getting back to the basics and setting precious time aside to reconnect with themselves. A few weeks ago, famous local yogi and lifestyle crusader Eoin Finn, and his band of cohorts hosted a protest of sorts with the Hammocks in the City event in downtown Vancouver. In this pop-up art event, hammocks were strung up among the trees outside the busy Vancouver Art Gallery and passers-by were encouraged to take a few minutes to scramble into a hammock and just… be.
It was a gorgeously sunny day and if you cared to notice, the sky was full of the type of fluffy clouds that bring to mind visions of cotton candy and childhood afternoons running in grassy fields. However, many of the busy pedestrians and impatient drives were too busy to notice, something that event founder Eoin Finn laments. The first Hammock in the City event took place 3 years ago, but Finn vows that the events will continue more regularly. In his quest to help others “find the best lifestyle for [themselves],” Finn strives to fight against the dominating Western drive for conquest and competition, by advocating a return to valuing relaxation and the concept of “taking in nature.” This return to nature is one part of Finn’s top 3 tips for leading less stressful lives, which he promises will lead to a more fulfilling and satisfying life
Yoga is one way that Finn says you can reconnect with yourself and is a good step to incorporating his three tips into your daily life. Spending an afternoon in a hammock is another.

Sexy and mysterious, lace takes on a whole new level of mystery come Fall. Layer your favourite lace shirt over a pattern (like plaid) or over a cami, that will still show a bit of skin.
The hot weather alternative to the denim jacket, the vest can transition to cooler temperature with layers. Layer it two ways: over long-sleeve shirts or under a long-sleeve jacket.
This trend showed up in the Spring and hasn’t stopped. While it may be a bit unconventional to some, when done right, it’s very cute. If you’re a bit apprehensive, stick to socks or tights that are in a similar tone. Feeling bolder? Go for contrast.
A summer staple. I love summer for the ease of getting dressed – throw on a cute dress and go. But in Fall, your Jersey Tank Dress doesn’t have to be banished to the back of your closet. Wear it with a structured blazer, a leather jacket, over top a thin long-sleeve shirt. Throw on Fall’s hot desert or cowboy boots, and you’re good to go.
Again layers, layers, layers. Make sure that your shorts are a bit boxy, and not skin tight. Wear your shorts with pieces that have more structure, dress shirts, blazers and cardigans. And of course, don’t forget your tights!

]]>Rather than trying to create the culture of your business, try creating an environment. If you create the right environment, eventually it will create the culture.
Asking someone to change their personality in order to fit a particular defined culture is as effective as asking a leopard to change its spots.
If you provide your employees with a great environment, then the energy in the room will get the best out of your staff.
Remember, you can teach skills, not personality.
By building an environment, it will naturally evolve into a culture, creating a more enjoyable and productive workplace.
]]>While these are good tactics at first, they are not a way to create sustainable clientele. Lowering your price may work for a short period of time, but eventually, as a business owner, you’ll want to raise your prices back to their original rates.
This creates a problem because you don’t want to drive away your clients. It’s always harder to raise prices than it is to lower them.
As a small business, you don’t have the capital to throw into a huge marketing campaign. But, defining your business core, focusing on what your business is about, that is free, and invaluable.
Work on improving what you already have – refine your customer service, go that extra mile; do things that set you apart from your competition that don’t cost much money.
Making a client feel welcome and being attentive to their needs will make them come back.
Creating a returning client is valuable because they will help promote you through word of mouth, something much more valuable than a $20,000 marketing campaign that doesn’t affect your clients at all.
One misconception is that marketing is a department. IT is a department. Finance is a department. But marketing isn’t.
Marketing is your receptionist, your assistant, your intern, anyone who interacts with the public. Focus on how your employees represent themselves and your company to the public.
Many businesses have Mission Statements. They hang them proudly so that their clients and other members of the public can see them. The problem with this is that people don’t connect to the words that they see.
Rather they connect to the experience they have with your business. These mission statements show that a company has a philosophy for what they do – but how much do they actually live by it? How much should they live by it? 80% of the time? 100%?
Everytime you up your game with your customer service, that’s the best marketing and PR you could ever invest in.
Focus on the basics because the basics never change.

Blogger playing road hockey across Canada to help food banks
(Vancouver, B.C., June 25, 2010) – Richard Loat is taking his passion for hockey and community involvement on the road. He is the organizer of Five Hole for Food, a grassroots campaign that will see him play road hockey in nine cities to generate donations for community food banks.
“I had a cross-country road trip already planned from Vancouver to Montreal when I realized this could be an opportunity to help those who are less fortunate,” said Loat, who is also a blogger for the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks. “When I started talking to other hockey fans across Canada to gauge their interest, I knew this was the start of something big.”
Five Hole for Food will start June 29 in Montreal and finish up July 9 in Vancouver. Loat has enlisted people in each city to organize a road hockey game. Anyone with a hockey stick can come out and play for free – players and spectators are asked to bring food donations for the local food bank.
Five Hole for Food sponsors include Molson, Boston Pizza, Marketwire, Red Bull, Rogers Communications, and Monster Energy Drink.
“This is the road trip of a lifetime,” said Loat, a 21-year-old university student from North Vancouver. “I was inspired by how Canadians were united by the 2010 Winter Olympics and saw an opportunity to use hockey for a good cause.
“Choosing to work with food banks was an easy choice. We can make a big impact with a little bit of time, work, and ultimately food. There are a lot of great causes out there, but we chose to help food banks because we can see the impact immediately. Food banks are facing shortages these days and this is something we all need to help solve however we can.”
Five Hole for Food will make stops in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton, Victoria, and Vancouver. Volunteers from food banks in the respective cities will be at each game to collect donations.
Several hockey teams across the country are also committed to supporting Five Hole for Food. For example, the Ottawa 67s street team will be participating, while the Vancouver Giants and Abbotsford Heat team mascots will make an appearance at the final game in Vancouver. Canadian National Hockey League teams have also donated prizes – such as autographed hockey sticks and jerseys – for auction with the proceeds to benefit food banks.
Also, former Vancouver Canucks goaltender Richard Brodeur is confirmed to be the Five Hole for Food ambassador at the Vancouver game on July 9.
“Canadians love hockey and are generous people. I think they will embrace Five Hole for Food when we visit their city,” said Loat. “Bring your hockey stick and come play in a fun game, or come out to watch and support us. I’m looking forward to meeting some great hockey fans.”
Those who can’t make it to the games can also make donations online: www.fiveholeforfood.com.

]]>Naturally, the first solution is to hire someone to help you. The trouble is, how do you know if you’re going to hire someone who’s going to do a good job?
You want someone who will require little training and that you are comfortable trusting them to do a good job.
As a business owner, you want to be remarkable. You shouldn’t have to settle for anything less than that when you’re looking to hire new employees.
You’ve worked hard to get where you are, so make wise decisions. Keep your business lean, hiring the wrong person is just adding fat. So before you go and hire someone, stop, and do it yourself.
By knowing exactly what you want done, what skills and requirements you need in your employee, you will be able to hire the best person.
For example, if you’re looking for someone to maintain the social media for your business, you need to narrow it down to what exactly you want them to do, since there are so many facets of social media.
Do you want them to create brand awareness? Convert your online followers to customers? Or just help you market your product or service?
When we think of social media, we don’t think about specifics, about what exactly social media encompasses.
Once you’ve struggled, you’ll know exactly what you’re looking for – someone who will excel where you’ve had problems.
Hire right, hire less.

Canadian company Beauty Through Balance seeks to capitalize on the current Acai trend by releasing a line of Acai berry based products.
Beauty Through Balance is a producer of facial and body products that utilize naturally sourced ingredients from around the world to create spa-quality products that are sold in luxury resorts across North America.
Their new Acai berry line consists of exfoliators, lotions and cleansers, including the Acai body emulsion, a rich lotion made with Capuacu butter and Acai extracts and which I was lucky enough to receive a sample to review!
The Acai Body Emulsion contains a mix of luxurious moisturizers like Capuacu butter to aid in absorption and moisturize skin as well Olivate, a derivative of olive oil and known for its ability to repair and restore the skin’s natural moisture barrier, and of course Acai berry itself.
The lotion smelled wonderful with a full fruity scent that was refreshing in the morning, and its texture easily spreads across the skin.
The emulsion absorbed quickly and left my skin feeling cool and refreshed. After a few days, my skin felt softer and smoother!
The only downside to this lotion was that the texture was slightly watery, so if you are looking for some extreme moisturizing action, then perhaps you should go for a thicker, body butter rather than this product.
For someone with normal skin, this lotion was perfect for daily use – I only wish I had received a larger sample so I could keep using this lovely emulsion!
All Body Through Balance products have been sourced ethically, and have the “Green Seal” of approval from the Forest Stewardship Council.
Body Through Balance products can be purchased at your local spa. You can find out more information about the Acai berry line and the rest of Body Through Balance’s products via their website: http://beautythroughbalance.ca/

Skytop II

The Thunder Low

The Vaider

The Thunder

The Society
The Skytop II are my favourite – I love the colour combo of the green and grey. They’d look really slick with some nice jeans, a t-shirt, and a cardigan.
But really, what we all want to know is, how would he look in them…shirtless?
