A lot of people ask me questions about how I became an entrepreneur. They wonder how I’m able to come up with so many ideas, where my ideas even begin, and how I know the idea will work. Hopefully I can provide some insight in these areas.

You Are What You Eat

…Or at least who you hang out with. The first and most important thing you need to do is to hang out with the right people. Ideas won’t start flowing unless you feel motivated and have a positive outlook.

For myself, I’m constantly surrounded by people who believe in me. The energy of the atmosphere is very important. As a result, your day is brighter, your mood is better, you are productive, and most importantly you are motivated.

Practice Makes Perfect

If you’re a dreamer but you never try to make your ideas come true then I can tell you, your entrepreneurial career will be short lived.

The easiest way to find a job is when you already have one, right? So get involved somehow! Start a small project on the side and see where you can take it.

This allows you to get a taste of it and if you don’t like it no biggie. It may just end up being something you enjoy doing on the side, a hobby. But if you do like it, keep going!

If things don’t work out then the only things that you’ve lost are a bit of time and money. Both things you can quickly get over.

But remember, you need to spend money to make money. Most entrepreneurs make the mistake of cutting corners on things they should be spending on. You want to make sure that you’re creating a product that you’re proud of.

Remember that your idea(s) will change several times over the course of your project, especially in the beginning stages, but that is a good sign because it means that you’re using your brain.

Not for Everyone

Here’s my warning, (even though I wouldn’t listen if I were in your shoes…but just to be safe) becoming an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart.

You may want (or need) to consider having a co-founder. It is very hard to make any progress when you get side tracked everyday; but don’t let that stop you from pursuing your dreams, it’s just something to consider.

If you stress out easy or want to take advantage of a friend’s strengths, then this is the route for you. It’s best to find someone who has the same desire to create a remarkable product or service.

That way you can bounce ideas, and share the workload. This is the case with Erin and I. We’re both driven and want the best for our product.

By having a co-founder I’m able to spend more time on utilizing my strengths, and she is with hers.

Taking the Leap

When you are ready to take the plunge you won’t regret it at all.

For me, it’s a drug; being able to do what I love, especially when it doesn’t feel like work. This is invaluable to me. This you’re ready to take a leap of faith?

Very good write up! I agree with what you say, especially surrounding yourself with positive people and influences. Although some can fight through their negative surroundings, many eventually succumb to the pessimism and never realize their true potential. Define Mag FTW!

You are too kind! I totally agree. You need to be mentally strong and the desire to succeed. Best thing anyone can do for themselves is get their feet wet, regardless of the situation. Do what you love and be the best at it.

This is great. I’m glad you said it’s not for everyone. I read somewhere that people are either managerial or entrepreneurial and very rarely are people both. Which means, the manager who tries to be an entrepreneur is shooting himself in the foot. The can own a company but need to work with someone who is entrepreneurial to succeed to maximum capability. Good work Michael!
